How to Create a Lead Magnet Approach that Doesn’t Suck

before you create a lead magnet/freebie, go through this process - it will save you time, get you better results, and help build your audience.

1. ask your existing audience what they’re struggling with?

why?

  • helps you better understand you existing audience

  • helps you start conversations with them that can lead to different opportunities

  • because you have access to them!

how?

use social lives, stories, posts to ask about struggles

  • give away free 15-minutes calls to learn about your audience

  • generate transcripts from all your calls and use ai to filter through and find themes

2. test concepts by creating small pieces of content:

why?

  • saves from investing too much time/energy/resources until you get real-world feedback

  • allows you to build pieces of the freebie while also getting content

  • helps build demand for the freebie once it’s ready

how?

  • social posts

  • newsletters

  • articles

  • short form video

  • stories

3. use a CTA that helps you get more info

why?

likes and comments can be misleading engagement - there are a number of reasons people engage at this level. offering a specific CTA allows you to measure responsiveness, AND you can use your CTA to dig deeper.

CTA ideas?

  • would a framework for this be helpful?

  • what was missing from this?

  • which step was most helpful?

  • would you like a template for this?

  • was this clear?

  • would you like some follow up content on this?

4. use this information to make 3 small-win, first-step lead magnets

why?

at this stage you have “an idea” of what’s going to work. creating 3 lead magnets gives you an opportunity to measure them against each other. (they may all do “well”)

how?

  • go with the smallest viable item (checklist, template, video, quiz, step-by-step, etc)

  • build a short landing page

  • promote each for NO LESSS THAN 2 weeks (it takes time)

    • put it in your stories, newsletter, blog, content captions, website, podcast, have your friends promote

  • could even run short-run ads to test in the cold market

5. go big on the one that performs the best!

why?

once you have a winner, double or triple down on it.

how to determine a winner?

there are a few things to consider when you think of what performs “the best.”

what does “the best” mean to you?

  • more followers

  • more appointments

  • more traffic

  • more sales

  • more alignment

once you know what is “best” go hard after it.
